What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that involves the use of clear plastic aligner trays. The aligner trays apply gentle, yet effective pressure to your teeth, pushing them into place. The treatment can be used for patients with crowded or crooked teeth, as well as those with problems with their bite, such as open bites, over bites, and under bites. Most patients can expect a straight, beautiful smile in about a year or two when using Invisalign trays. To ensure the treatment is effective, you’ll need to wear your Invisalign trays for no less than 22 hours every single day.
Why would you want or need Invisalign?
Invisalign is clear and can barely be seen when worn. You can benefit from straightening your teeth without the bulk and pain that sometimes comes with the metal brackets and wiring of traditional braces. The trays are ideal for older teens and adults who want to straighten their teeth inconspicuously. Professional adults who rely heavily on their appearance will benefit from this option, because it’s invisible to the naked eye, allowing you to maintain a professional appearance. The trays can be removed, allowing you to fully and thoroughly brush your teeth, as well as floss, daily.
What are the benefits of wearing Invisalign?
One of the most profound benefits of Invisalign is that the aligner trays are clear. You’ll no longer be burdened by a mouth full of metal wiring and brackets. Many patients find Invisalign more comfortable to wear because it’s gentler on their teeth, gums, and lips. The treatment is equally as effective as traditional braces. Another key benefit to Invisalign is that it can be removed to properly clean your teeth. This prevents the likelihood of missing spots where brackets or wires of traditional braces impede thorough brushing.
What can you expect with typical Invisalign treatment?
To begin Invisalign treatment, you’ll come into our office for an exam and consultation. Part of the exam involves taking a variety of x-rays, used to plan out a treatment protocol that best reflects your goals for your smile. Impressions are taken of your teeth, and sent out to have special Invisalign trays made custom for you. You’ll be instructed on how to wear the Invisalign, and when you can or should remove them. You’ll come back into the office after a few weeks to have a new set of trays made for you. Treatment will be stalled or delayed if you fail to come to each of your appointments, or if you remove the appliance for long periods throughout the day. Invisalign is effective for most patients, but certain individuals may need additional orthodontic treatment prior to being fitted for the aligner trays. After orthodontic treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear a specially-made retainer to ensure your results remain for life.
